Pittman, Jr. c. 1935-44 to track household income and expenses. 200 pages, filled with handwritten data throughout (excepting a few blank pages), mainly in ink, sometimes in pencil. Near fine. A fascinating, unbelievably meticulous record of John and Gehring Pittman’s out of pocket expenses for much of the period, including monthly rent ($45); comestibles (melons 30¢, honey 35¢, Cokes 25¢, etc.); gas (from 60¢ to $3.04), and various other expenses: stockings $1.38, car $27.55, car payment $20, sandwich 35¢, John’s shoes $2.50 and haircut 60¢, bread 12¢, movies 50¢, milk 13¢, dinner out $1.20, trolley 10¢, car--final payment $35.25, federal income tax $5.13, Gehring’s college debt $50, beer 24¢, and on and on. Also included are accounts of “Money earned” by Gehring (1937-41), and John (1935-44), an inventory of the couple’s household possessions (from 10¢ for a bath stopper to $39.50 for a studio couch).
