Circa 200 B.C. – 200 A.D. This Colima rattle figure measures approximately 3” tall by about 3” wide, and depicts a rotund female figure. She is shown in a seated position, with arms gracefully curving outward. Fine detailing was used to show backward curving hair, ending in a long ponytail down her back. She exhibits a very obese, round form, with exaggerated, enlarged genitalia, perhaps symbolic of the general concept of fertility. The emphasis on fertility may imply that this object was used for ceremonial purposes, perhaps related to ensuring pregnancy and/or a healthy birth. The rattle remains in perfect working condition. It fits comfortably in the hand, and still emits a wonderfully striking, crisp rattle sound, even after being buried and unused for millennia. The musical instrument functionality of the rattle feature is engaging and adds depth to the experience of this artifact, since it is possible to hear, as well as see and feel, an intimate object once held and used by a member of this enigmatic, ancient West Mexican culture. Intact and in remarkable original condition with no restoration and no repair. The rattle function works perfectly, and creates a wonderful sound. Heavy mineral encrustation remains overall, indicative of thousands of years of burial. Minor weathering, wear, chipping and abrasions overall.

Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection, USA. Collected pre-1970.
