This is a Victorian era officer's shako of the 53rd Shropshire Light Infantry. The body is composed of felt with a black patent leather peak, top and "V" shaped reinforcing on the sides. The helmet plate has a large gilt Victorian crown at the top over a gilt rayed star with a silvered diamond cut star in the center with a gilt Maltese cross in the middle with "SHROPSHIRE REGIMENT" in a band around the number "53". There are 10 battle honors on the Maltese cross. Above the helmet plate is a green pompon. There are two floral ear bosses suspending gilt velvet backed chin scales. There is a natural skived leather sweat band with a red silk lining.
Condition: Very good, the patent leather shows only very minor wear. The gilt components show aging. The shako plate is slightly tarnished and has a dark appearance overall. The lining has a few small rips.
