1911-D $5 MS64 PCGS. An interesting comparison can be made between issues of the Indian half eagle series. The 1908-S date has a mintage of 82,000 coins, and it is considered one of the most common dates in the series. This 1911-D issue has a mintage of 72,500 coins, only 9,500 less than the '08-S, yet it is considered one of the great rarities of the series. Indeed, this rare date is difficult to find in any Mint State grade, being rarely offered. Unlike the key-date 1911-D quarter eagle with about 20 examples offered in this 2007 FUN auction, this is the only 1911-D half eagle presented for sale. PCGS has only certified 98 Mint State examples of this date in all grades from MS60 to MS65.
This piece is an impressive near-Gem, exhibiting lustrous honey-gold color and remarkable surfaces that are virtually mark-free. While the present piece just misses the Gem grade level, it should still be considered seriously by Set Registry collectors. Only two half eagle collectors can possibly own a finer example certified by PCGS, and just 12 more can own a piece of this quality, based on the current PCGS population data (11/06). Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth provided a handy summation: "The 1911-D Indian Head half Eagle is one of the great rarities of the series, and a very difficult coin to find in any Uncirculated grade, ... as such, this date currently ranks as the fifth most difficult coin in the series to obtain in Gem MS-65 or higher." Population: 12 in 64, 2 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
