Lemuel Smith/by Battery I-5th U.S. Artillery/Yorktown, Mechanicsville, Gaines Hill, TurkeyBend/Malvern Hill, Bull Run 2d, Antietam, Sheperds Ford/Snickers Gap, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville/Gettysburg”; in overall very good to fine condition with a finely etched W. Clauberg blade, deluxe brass guard andpommel, silver fluted grip and brass mounted nickeled finish scabbard. Accompanying this lot is a file containing copies of National Archives documents on Lt. Smith including copies of hand written period lettersreferring to his being presented with “this beautiful sword, a token of the respect and esteem with which you are held in the hearts of your late companions”. Smith participated in the defense of Washington, D.C. and wasinvolved in over 12 engagement battles between March, 1862 and July 22, 1864 (Siege of Atlanta). He died on January 1st, 1867 at Key West, Florida of Hepatitis, attended with nervous exhaustion.
