1859-S S$1 AU58 NGC.<p>Although the San Francisco Mint began production of gold and smaller silver coins in 1854 and 1855, respectively, the first Silver Dollars delivered in California did not come until 1859. A mere 20,000 coins were produced, and, since they were delivered at the request of local merchants, most examples were exported to the Orient, where they were melted. This fortunate survivor is the lightest rub away from Mint State. The strike is characteristically soft over Liberty's head on the obverse and the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers on the reverse. The balance of the features are mostly bold, the moderately abraded surfaces are overlaid in alternating lavender-gray and golden-gray shades. Several planchet streaks (as struck) are noted on the obverse. From the C. R. Perrine Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
