Obv: bust of Taylor right, demi wreath of oak and laurel below, MAJOR GENERAL ZACHARY TAYLOR arcs above, RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS MAY 9, 1848 curves below wreath, tiny artist names at shoulder and lower rim. Rev: an inner circle of two entwined vipers, one about to strike, encircles a view of the American Army in motion with troops that seemingly stretch forever to the horizon, BUENA VISTA FEB. 22. & 23. 1847 arcs above the snakes, oak and laurel demi wreath below, artists’ names at bottom rim. Deep chestnut brown throughout with some noticeable toning spots on both sides. The high relief obverse die was designed by S. Ellis and the reverse die was designed by F.A. Smith, with the dies for both sides crafted by Charles Cushing Wright, the designer of the $50 Humbert "slugs". Awarded to General Taylor for his decisive victory at Buena Vista in 1847 during the Mexico War. Original strikings of this medal are rare and desirable, and the present piece will quickly bring out the best in our bidders.
