1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse MS63 NGC. Breen-6839, Tar
1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse MS63 NGC. Breen-6839, Taraszka-14, BD-2, High R.5. The BD-2 is the only Small Stars Obverse variety that shows star 9 away from the Y in LIBERTY and star 13 away from the bust. Star 1 points toward the bottom of a curl. Two points of star 8 are close to the cap. Stars 1 and 13 are about equally distant from the bust, and the second 9 is a bit further than the other digits are from each other. There is a center dot in the hair behind Liberty's ear. Numismatic researchers believe that the 1799 Large Stars varieties were created after the Small Stars punch broke during the creation of a die, since the Large Stars device is seen on several 1799 variants and carries over to the single 1800 obverse (and variety for the year) and one of the 1801 obverse dies. The reverse of this variety was married successively with four different obverses to create the BD-1 through BD-4 varieties.
On the reverse a berry is centered under A, and a leaf tip touches the I in AMERICA at the center of the base. The first A in AMERICA does not touch the wing feathers, a diagnostic for this die. A die rust lump shows between the U and N. The present example shows clashing of the dentils from the obverse inside the reverse rim from above F through AME. Otherwise both dies appear to be from early die states, with no other visible clashing or cracks. Considerable luster shows on the obverse, a bit less so on the reverse, and both sides are a pretty antique-gold color. No adjustment marks are present save for a few visible under a loupe below OF, and there is some light buildup in the protected areas of each side. The Bass-Dannreuther reference estimates that 35 to 45 pieces are known of this rare variety. While NGC has not attributed this piece, that service has graded 60 coins of the 1799 (all varieties) in MS63, with 49 finer. Both NGC and PCGS have graded several examples of the 1799 Small Stars in MS64, although not necessarily this BD-2 variety.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
