1798/7 $10 9x4 Stars--Obverse Repaired--NCS. AU Details. Breen-6836, Taraszka-9, BD-1, High R.4. The variety is instantly distinguished by the distinctive obverse star arrangement, one of the 13-star designs after Mint personnel wised up, subsequent to Tennessee's admission in 1796, to the fact that stars could not be added for every new state in the Union. The die crack from the L in LIBERTY down through the cap also aids attribution. Telltale swirls in the left obverse field and on the rear of the lower hair curls attest to the repair, which is well done and undistracting. Otherwise the surfaces are a pleasing, beautiful orange-gold, with considerable luster remaining. An appealing piece of early gold, deserving strong bids regardless of the NCS disclaimer.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
