1797 $10 Large Eagle MS62 PCGS. Breen-6835, Taraszka-1
1797 $10 Large Eagle MS62 PCGS. Breen-6835, Taraszka-11, BD-3, R.5. The eagle on the reverse has a short, thin neck, and stars 7 through 10 on the reverse are in a straight line, with stars 7 and 10 lower than the others. The arrowheads run to the center of the N in UNITED. A wispy die crack runs through the tops of UNITED. The eagle has a short, thin neck, and no tongue. A small die center punch shows on the center of the eagle's breast. On the obverse, the 10 stars on the left side, because of lapping, have shortened inner points, with the inner point of star 10 considerably shorter. Two small die cracks appear through the last 7; the leftmost joins the diagonal of that number with its lower serif, while the rightmost runs from the rim through the upper serif and thence to the bust. The dentilation is quite weak or nonexistent from 3 o'clock on the obverse to 5:30.
According to the Dannreuther-Bass Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties (and Anthony Taraszka as well), this very scarce variety was struck after both varieties of the 1798/7 eagles. This is the rarest of the three varieties of Large Eagle (or Heraldic Eagle) coins dated 1797. The Dannreuther-Bass reference continues, "This singular reverse die seems to be prepared by John Smith Gardner, though it employs a Short Thin Neck eagle for the reverse die. If it is a Gardner product, it is the only short neck Large Eagle die he created, as all his other reverse dies have either a long neck (thick or thin).
"The star pattern on the reverse has elements of both a cross pattern and an arc pattern. Perhaps this reverse die was the product of John Smith Gardner and Robert Scot, as Scot used only thick, short necks on his Large Eagle dies and no tongue for the eagle. In favor of Gardner is the use of seven solid vertical stripes with six clear stripes and the two rows of tail feathers. The debate will continue." This lovely and rare coin offers greenish-gold, lustrous and frosty surfaces. A few light adjustment marks are limited to cloud 5 on the reverse. PCGS has graded only 11 pieces of the 1798 Large Eagle (all varieties) in MS62, with three finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
