1758 Map of “NORTH AMERICA” by T. Jefferys, London
1758 French & Indian War Period, Historic Engraved MAP titled, “NORTH AMERICA,” with Vignette depiction of Native American Indians, by T. Jefferys, London, Choice Very Fine.
This lovely original Map was published by "Salmon's Gazetteer," measuring 10” x 8” and is in very nice clean condition and is well printed in rich black on white laid period paper. It has some typical light fold lines, full outer margins and choice overall eye appeal. This is a fascinating "time capsule" being drawn at the time of the French and Indian War. The area north of the American Colonies is labeled "Canada or New France,” yet there is also an area labeled "Labrador or New Britain." Given its size there are some intriguing consolidations of geographic locations. There is a "Georgia," "Carolina," "Virginia," "Maryland," and "Delaware." Yet Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, etc. are labeled in a smaller sliver of text as "New England." Montreal and Quebec are identified, as these were key centers of French dominion in Canada during several wars with the English over the possession of North America. The West Coast is labeled "California" and "New Albion." The top of Central America is labeled "Mexico or New Spain." South America is shown but almost amusingly, is labeled "Terra Firma." Several Eastern Native American Indian Tribes are identified: "Iroquois," "Cherokees," and "Illinois" along with the "Eskimaux" located in Labrador or New Britain. The "Arctic Circle" is depicted at the top of the map. Lastly, as this Map was drawn long before the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806, while some settlements along the California coastline were known, there is a vast portion of the western half left simply blank and labeled "PARTS UNKNOWN." At the upper left corner a rather fanciful Vignette depiction of two Native American Indians each wearing a featured headdress and one with Bow & Arrows in his quiver, standing overlooking what appears to be a huge waterfall, perhaps Niagra Falls.
