This fine elbaite (tourmaline) specimen from the famous Barra de Salinas District (mouth of Salinas river) in the Coronel Murta district of Minas Gerais, Brazil exhibits some dramatic and attractive color-zonation. The bottom of this prismatic tourmaline crystal features a light pink to yellowish green color and as we move toward the steep termination of the crystal we see a steady gradation from light green to dark green. The luster is good on this specimen and this tourmaline is translucent. Brazilian tourmaline has been famous among collectors and gemologists since the 16th century. Among the oldest and greatest of all Brazilian localities is the district of Barra de Salinas, encompassing a gem-bearing pegmatite swarm that continues to yield superb specimens today. This specimen was formerly in the private collection of a prominent Boston area mineral collector and dealer, Ernie Schlichter (1929-2007). Dimensions (cm): 8.5 H x 1.7 W x 1.6 D.
