Available for sale is this exceptional and rare circa 1880’s Buffalo Horn Head Dress attributed to the Northern Cheyenne Native American Indians. The piece features a long Buffalo hide trailer adorned with early old trade ribbons and trade clothe drops, beaded rosettes, and a beaded brow band. The Great American Bison Buffalo horn tips are accented by old horse tail hair, fringe wraps, and four rows of glass trade seed beads. The interior of the hide has early stains indicative of its true use. A highlight of this piece is the original front chin tie strap with long heavy old hawk brass bells still attached. These often would break off over time and are rarely seen on old authentic headdresses. The piece shows an exceptionally beaded brow band flanked by two round beaded rosettes all with original early glass trade seed beads in a fantastic geometric traditional pattern. This is truly an excellent condition example exhibiting wonderful style and form. The piece appears to have been professionally preserved and kept for many years with the fur and hide having a supple feel. This is truly the finest example of a period-correct Cheyenne headdress and a rare find. The headdress measures overall 45”L x 25”W. Review the pictures for origin and age.
