Don Stivers Signed and Numbered A Day of Honor Print
During the Battle of Las Guasimas, Cuba, June 24, 1898, Major Bell of the 1st Cavalry had gone down with a wound to the leg. Captain C. G. Ayers attempted to carry him from the field, but his shattered leg bone broke through the skin causing so much pain * that Ayers had to let him down. The fire was so intense that in one plot of ground fifty feet square sixteen me were killed or wounded. Still, there was a fellow American soldier badly hurt and in need of assistance, and Private Augustus Walley - of the * famed "Buffalo Soldiers" - his compassion overcoming self-preservation, ran to help. Between Ayers and Walley, Bell was dragged to safety. This courageous effort gave Private Augustus Walley his second nomination for the Medal of Honor. * * * * Artist: Don StiversTitle: A Day of HonorMedium: Print on paperEdition: Out of 3600Date: 1998Signature: Signed and numbered by the artist in pencilImage Size: 17" x 23 1/2" * * Paper Size: 21 1/2" x 27 1/2"Condition: ExcellentAuthenticity: Included * Biography * * Following a natural inclination towards American History as a subject for fine art, Don, in the 1970's, began a series of paintings on the Westward Expansion. In 1984 he began painting Civil War subjects. With the help of professional historians and driven * by his own desire to know the most intricate visual details of the subjects he portrays, he has created some of the most remarkable military art of this century. His focus on the Buffalo Soldier, beginning with Tracking Victorio in 1988 shone light on a subject * that had rarely been chronicled in military art before. The Buffalo Soldier prints ignited such an overwhelmingly positive response that very often his limited editions were sold out within hours of their release. * * *Retrieved from: http://www.donstivers.com/about * * *
