(MGM, 1968) Collection of (8) manila envelopes, each containing one processed roll of black & white 35mm film cut into strips for printing, accompanied by the printed contact sheet for enclosed roll. Images (more than 200 in all) range throughout the entire production process of Stanley Kubrick directing 2001: A Space Odyssey, even including several of Kubrick with his daughter Vivian who played Squirt Floyd. All but one of these combination negatives & contact sheets is focused almost entirely on Kubrick at work, with the last being special wide-format 70mm images of Dullea and Lockwood in the Pod bay. Virtually none of these images have ever been published or even seen by anyone since the time of the film’s release, as this unique archive is attributed to having once been Kubrick’s own which he buried away in storage. Each contact image is sequentially numbered in grease pencil, presumably in Kubrick’s own hand, with a number of images being sticker-selected by him for printing, and some of the envelopes have the photographer’s name noted, being variously McKennery, Ward, Dewer, and Dmitri (Kessel). An extraordinary wealth of heretofore largely unseen images which document the most celebrated work of one of the world’s greatest creative visionaries.
