Revolutionary War Leather Pistol “Saddle Holsters” Pair
c. 1780 Revolutionary War Era, Scarce Original Pair of Leather and Brass Tip Pistol “Saddle Holsters,” Very Good.
This original Pair of Revolutionary War Era Saddle Holsters for Pistols measures about 12.75” long to their metal tips. Both holsters are lacking the top cover flaps. Each pistol bucket also has sewn attached leather provisions to hold 4 pre-measured paper cartridges, amounting to a total of 8 reloads. the Brass end caps each with matching decorative finials. The leather is original with areas of expected surface crazing, flaking and minor loses yet they remain very complete and stable. A very similar pair in style of these current holsters is described and illustrated as being American, shown published in the reference book titled, “Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” by George C. Neumann, and Frank J. Kravic, page 145, item No 4. Almost every person of the day who had a horse (if they could afford it), would typically have a saddle with a pair of these “saddle holsters” for carrying their flintlock pistols for either protection or for military use. Being made of period leather, seeing such heavy normal use, there holsters were mostly discared when worn or no longer of practical use due to gun design changes, so these days they are quite scarce.
