This is an exceptional Yokut California Native American Indian Human Effigy Figural and Rattlesnake pattern polychrome basket with a bottleneck construction and dates from the 19th Century. The basket, which is in a large size, depicts a “friendship” polychrome design with six human figures each holding hands around the body of the basket which has a rattlesnake geometric pattern at the edge. The top of the basket has the iconic bottleneck with flared edge with shows six three bar crosses. Friendship baskets were given as gifts to family and friends to store personal items and represents the three dimension of human existence: the celestial world along the top edge, the human dimension represented by the effigy figures and the stylized rattlesnake wrapped around the body symbolizes the protector of the underworld. Provenance: From a 90-year collection out of Central Arizona in the Coconino National Forest. The basket has been well preserved for its well over 100-year age showing some slight weave lost and a stabilized base (stabilized with glue as shown). From the Yokut American Indians from the Tulare Lake region of South-Central, California. Yokut Human Effigy “Friendship” baskets are some of the rarest examples with some selling at auction for $15,210 at Pook and Pook’s 2008 auction, $11,000 at Cowan’s 2010 auction, and $9,000 at the August in Santa Fe Auction in 2004 with this being the largest example offered for sale. Measures overall 10.25”H x 10” in diameter.
