Item/Description: Antique portable lap desk / traveling writing box with locking, curved, double hinged lid which opens to reveal a purple leather writing surface, letter compartments, and crystal inkwells. Brass hinges, lock, and screws. A small pin pulls to open a drawer at the side. Brass plate stamped B&D's Patent. Includes key as shown. Dovetail joints to drawer.

Writing slopes were widely used from the 17th to the mid-20th century as personal, portable workspaces for writing, reading, and storing documents. They were popular among travelers and military officers (often referred to as "campaign slopes").
