Winchester Model 1887 10 gauge lever action shotgun with very early manufacture date of 1891. This is the classic big bore shotgun that found favor with not only sportsmen, but lawmen, prison guards and stage coach drivers. Working like the famed Winchester lever action rifles of the period, the Model 1887 shotgun was a fast firing and extremely powerful firearm. Designed by Jonathan Browning and introduced during some of the most violent years of the American West, the 1887 shotgun was first offered in 12 gauge and then in 1890 was available in the larger, more powerful 10 gauge. This example with serial number 30510 is one of the very first of the 10 gauge offerings. Most examples found today show very hard frontier and field use and often display considerable abuse and replaced parts. This shotgun with 30” barrel retains a most attractive aged patina to the metal parts. It also retains the original steel butt plate that is more often than not replaced with a later rubber recoil pad. All Winchester markings and patent dates on this model are located on the lower tang under the lever and are sharp and clear as is the desirable “WRA” (Winchester Repeating Arms) entwined logo on the left side of the receiver. Mechanically this rare shotgun is tight and fully functioning with strong springs and a fine bore. The stock and forend panels are solid and sound. This fine shotgun recently came out of Arizona. A very difficult to find and distinct Winchester model in remarkable condition.
