LS signed "Wm. McKinley, Jr.," one page, 5 x 7, House of Representatives letterhead, June 17, 1889. Letter to the Commissioner of Pensions, James R. Tanner, in full: "I hand you herewith a letter just received asking that an order be made for immediate examination. I trust the same will be granted." Matted and framed with a photo of McKinley to an overall size of 13 x 16. In very good to fine condition, with light wrinkling and intersecting folds. James R. Tanner (1844–1927) was an American soldier and civil servant who is best known for having lost both his legs below the knee at the Second Battle of Bull Run. He served the remainder of the war as a government stenographer, and was later present at the death of Abraham Lincoln, with his notes existing as the most comprehensive record of the events of the President's assassination.
