Item/Description: Antique hand-colored aquatint print titled "The Parish Beadle", created by William Henry Pyne in 1805. The print depicts a parish beadle, a former petty official responsible for keeping order in the church and punishing petty offenders. The main figure is in a civic uniform, holding a mace or staff of office, which is a symbolic staff indicating an official's position or rank. Behind the beadle, two churchwardens lead a procession. Beadles were historically responsible for maintaining order, enforcing church rules, and managing parish affairs in 17th- and 18th-century Europe. Published by William Miller, London. Marked "Published By William Miller Albemarle Street Jan. 1.1805." Enclosed in a later period frame.
