William Blackstone. English jurist (172
William Blackstone. English jurist (1723-80), the father of English law, whose work had a strong influence on U.S. law; author of four-volume Commentaries on the Laws of England, the first comprehensive treatment of the English law and Constitution. A.L.S. "W. Blackstone," Wallingford, Sept. 7, 1762, 1 p. To an unnamed correspondent. "I did myself the honour to call on you last week at Exeter College to congratulate you & the Publick on the Victory you have gained over your late dangerous illness and to trouble you with another message which I have now sent by this post to Mr. Farrell in a letter to be communicated to you; which, if he still continues absent, I beg the favour of you to open...." Written while Professor of English Law at Oxford (1758-66). His lectures, which became the basis for his Commentaries, were known for their style and simplicity of presentation. Nicely inlaid. A fine, darklypenned example of a seldom-encountered figure.
