This great compass predates the popular Brunton compasses, which were first created in the 1890s. In fact, this early compass dates much earlier: Folding wooden box compass, measures 3" x 3" x 1", with the compass itself 2.5" in diameter. The hinges are brass, and the working locking closure mechanism is nickel. The white compass face is marked with black lettering, 360 degrees around the dial, and does have some staining on the face. The functioning magnetic needle has what appears to be some rust on the surface. The box construction appears to be walnut, and is in good condition. Lewis E. And William Gurley (born in Troy NY in the 1820s) were noted producers of survey and civil engineering equipment up through the early 1900s. -60380
