This lot features a Very Early Example of a Marbles Arms & Mfg. Co. Safety Axe. This is the famed safety axe that Webster Marble designed and patented in 1898. Most of these early examples that still exist today show very hard use, broken or replaced handles and are often missing the metal safety guard that folds out of the handle to cover the sharpened blade of the axe. This early example is all complete and original. The safety guard is clearly stamped “Marble Arms and Mfg. Co., Gladstone, Mich. U.S.A. Pat’d 1898.” The handle has darkened with age and handling but is solid and tight fitting to the steel axe head. The head itself shows use, but is not pitted or showing any past history of abuse, over cleaning or even poor storage. The guard fits perfectly over the axe head and folds into the handle exactly as it was designed with no bends or dents.
