Stafford County. The Rappahannock Gold Mining Company, incorporated under N.Y. State laws. Certificate No. 1683, issued for 100 shares to T. Harbison on September 22nd, 1882. Datelined New York. Signed by W.W. Hanly as President and J.A. MacPherson as Secretary. Vignettes include: near upper center, seven miners working above ground, with an Indian brave watching from a cliff in the background. In the lower left is an allegorical woman holding a scale of justice in her left hand and a shield with "E Pluribus Unum" across it in her right. A small eagle atop a world globe with "North America" visible is at the center bottom. The ornate border and print are in black. Printer: W.E. Badeau, 119 Fulton St. N.Y. U/C. "State of Virginia" is printed below the masthead, while "Stafford County" is below the vignette on the bottom left. While little could be found in our library concerning this company, placer gold mining started in Virginia in 1804, with lode mining following suit quickly. Thomas Jefferson’s notes on Virginia made one of the earliest references to gold in this era when he described a piece of ore which was discovered in 1782 on the bank of the Rappahannock River, which yielded 17 pennyweight of gold [Ref: goldmaps.com/east/virginia].
