c1900 - Large 38" x 32" framed artwork from the famous (or infamous) United Mine Workers Union. Depicted is John Mitchell, "The Miner`s Champion," with various vignettes surrounding the central portrait. The UMWA was founded in Columbus in 1890, representing mainly coal miners. Their main goal was to provide safer and better working conditions along with higher wages for the dangerous job of mining. An (8) hour work day was one of their first achievements in 1898. Numerous famous strikes, labor wars and massacres played out over the decades that followed. John Mitchell was president from 1898 to 1907. -61805
