The Palmer carbine, manufactured by E.G. Lawson & Co., of Windsor, Vermont, is significant as the first metallic cartridge, bolt-action weapon accepted by the Ordnance Department for issue to the U.S. Army. The Ordnance Department purchased 1,001 Palmer carbines late in the Civil War; the carbines were delivered in June 1865. Blade front and two leaf rear sights with the rear sight base marked "M" and the left side of the barrel below the rear sight marked "MM." The top of the receiver is marked "Wm PALMER/PATENT/DEC. 22, 1863" and the lock plate is marked "U.S./ E.G LAWSON. &CO./ WINDSOR, VT" ahead of the hammer and dated "1865" at the rear. The stock has a script "MM" boxed cartouche and "MM" inspector stamp with saddle ring on the left side. The comb is stamped "C.S.P." and the trigger guard, barrel band and buttplate are stamped "P."

Very good plus. The carbine retains traces of faded original blue finish in the protected areas with the balance a mottled brown patina with some minor pitting mostly on the barrel towards the muzzle. The lock plate and hammer retain 60% original case colors. The stock is fine with a sliver of wood missing near the trigger guard, filled holes from a removed sight on top of the wrist and some minor pressure dents. The stock markings are crisp. Mechanically excellent.
