Two Hardcover Books on Edward Hopper. Phaidon and Norton, 1997-2007
A lot of two large-format art monographs regarding the work of American realist painter Edward Hopper. The first volume is Silent Theater: The Art of Edward Hopper by Walter Wells, published by Phaidon Press. It is a hardcover edition with a pictorial dust jacket reproducing the artist's 1940 painting Gas. The second volume is Edward Hopper: A Journal of His Work, featuring an introduction by Deborah Lyons and published by W. W. Norton and Company in association with the Whitney Museum of American Art. This volume is bound with a red cloth spine and printed paper-covered boards that replicate a page from the artist's personal ledger. Internally, the book contains facsimile reproductions of Hopper's handwritten record books, which include his notes on pigments, pricing, and thumbnail sketches of major works such as Farm at Essex. Both volumes are large quarto in format.
