Trinity College gold award medal, image of Elizabeth I in her Renaissance ruff and bejeweled bodice. Eimer-64. The engraving here is marvelous, intricate and in high relief. This one was awarded to Ernest H. Alton, possibly the same Alton who was MP from 1921 to 1933 representing Trinity College. This medal was issued from about 1850 onward, given occasionally to an outstanding candidate in any of several fields, one of which was politics. The design relates to the 1591 grant by Queen Elizabeth I to erect a college at Dublin: the founding of Trinity. An extremely elegant piece, with plain edge, Proof and virtually as struck with extremely high rims (small bump at one point). Comes in the original red plush case made for the college by Edmond Johnson of Dublin (inscribed in gilt on the inside lid's white silk).
