Strobridge, William H. CATALOGUE OF THE ENTIRE CABINET OF ANTIQUE, MEDIEVAL AND MODERN COINS, MEDALS AND JETONS, FOR MANY YEARS KNOWN AND CELEBRATED AS THE GROUX COLLECTION, NOW THE PROPERTY OF A LADY IN WASHINGTON. New York, April 7-9, 1874. 8vo, original printed wraps. iv, (3)-57, (1) pages; 1173 lots. Some chipping at edges; mostly unopened; near fine. Strobridge’s introduction borders on the poetic and is well worth reading: “The ‘Groux Collection,’ which has had a name in American numismatology for the last quarter of a century, is now before the public, with the veil removed. ... The fond old dreamer whose name it bears has himself passed away, and the fate that befalleth all collections is about to come also upon the one with which he had freely mingled his very life.” Adams 17: “Carrara medals. Proof 1829, 1830 5¢. Papal, ‘ghostly’ coinage. A collection of the widest scope.”
