1870s-80s - A wonderful photo of early Telluride nestled at the foot of a box canyon with Bridal Veil Falls in the background. About a half dozen mine buildings can be seen in the foreground.

In the mid-1870s John Fallon made the first claim, the Sheridan Mine, in Marshal Basin above Telluride. It was the first in a string of local claims and a tent camp was established in the valley below. Originally called Columbia, the rowdy mining camp became a town in 1878, and changed its name to Telluride. The Sheridan and others that followed were rich in zinc, lead, copper, silver and gold [Ref: www.telluride-co.gov/index.aspx?page=33].
