c. pre-1880-John Taylor came to the California Gold Rush from England and was an early gold rush metals dealer. He parlayed the metals business into a chemical and assay supply house, which was inherited by his son, who bears the same name. It is thought that the senior Taylor was the son of a well known British assayer, who may have come to California in the early 1850s to work for companies associated with British funding for parts of the Mariposa estate. In this lot is one 6” long, 3.5" wide bullion mold. The mold bears two 2" cupel depressions and two 0.5" cupel depressions. The top is embossed “John Taylor & Co/ Of Cal”. The simple turned wooden handle is 10" long. Excellent condition, and likely dates before 1880. A fantastic piece. HKA#64298
