Early Model 1879 Springfield .45-70 caliber cavalry saddle ring carbine, serial number 187288*. This is a fine early carbine made in 1882 with all the correct features including sling ring bar, trap in butt plate for cleaning rods, “C” marked carbine rear sight, etc. A true original U.S. issued carbine made for the Indian Wars. Uncleaned, naturally aged metal has a dark aged blue patina and shows no evidence of any restoration, cleaning or abuse. This issued carbine has the “star” stamping after the serial number indicating that it was returned to the arsenal for repairs or updates. Most of these carbines saw very hard service on the Western Frontier and those that were returned usually had seen the most service in the Indian Wars. This carbine has the later dated 1884 breech block with brass firing pin and was no doubt part of the repair process before the carbine was re-issued for more service. It retains the correct clear “U.S. Springfield” marked lock plate with eagle motif, correct carbine stock and all correct barrel “VP” over “eagle head” proof marks on the original 22 inch barrel. There is some pitting on the butt plate, lower tang and hammer attesting to the hard frontier use to which this carbine was subjected, however it retains excellent mechanics and a bright near mint rifled bore and very solid stock and forearm with no cracks or chips. Overall, a very good Indian Wars cavalry Trapdoor carbine. This is the standard model that was used in every major engagement from the Battle of the Rosebud and Battle of the Little Bighorn to Wounded Knee. A fine uncleaned attic-condition example with solid wood, correct features and a wonderful historical past! This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Matt
