Offered in this lot is a First year production Smith & Wesson Number 2 Old Model Army Revolver, chambered in .32 caliber. The revolver started manufacture in the same year that the Civil War commenced; 1861, and ran until 1874. No. 2 Army revolvers under serial number 35731 were manufactured during the Civil War - This firearm shows a 4684 serial! The S&W No. 2 was the manufactures first revolver chambered above .22 caliber. It is quoted from 'Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms'; "The Model No. 2 was a popular sidearm with many officers and enlisted men during the Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer is known to have owned a pair of these... The notorious Western Gunslinger 'Wild Bill' Hickock, while marshal of Deadwood was carrying a Model 2 Army (As well as aces and eights) the night he was shot in August 1874".Typically Number 2 Army's are found in heavily used, and abused condition, this example shows some use, but displays exceptional care in maintenance, with lovely matching serial number rosewood grips, a nice 5" barrel, with good rifling, solid hinges, and mechanical components, showing no evidence of over-cleaning or alterations. The revolver also shows correct markings, reading; "Smith & Wesson. Springfield, MASS." on the top of the barrel, serial number: "4684" on the butt of the grip, and "Patented APRIL 3. 1855 JULY 5. 1859 & DEC 18. 1860" in tiny script on the cylinder. This revolver qualifies as an Antique firearm, and in worthy of any the finest Civil War, Old West, or Smith & Wesson Collections! Serial Number: 4684.
