This is a unique handmade polychrome painted stretched rawhide parfleche shield in the style of the Sioux Native American Indians. The shield is from the 20th Century and was handmade in Northwestern Montana. The piece shows a wetted and stretched rawhdie parfleche with an old bent willow wood branch frame which is sewn with sinew rawhide. The front of the shield shows polychrome painted in red, blue, yellow and black showing a Great American Bison Buffalo skull at the center which is surounded by 28 or 29 stars. At the base of the front of the shield shows a sinew tied set of two drops which contains a long strand of horse hair which is wrapped in old trade clothe red stroud and accented by two round hand carved mother of pearl beads along with a wound glass red trade bead.
