Sioux Beaded Hide War Shirt w/ Horsehair Fringe
This is an exceptional beaded men’s war shirt from the Sioux Native American Indians. The piece shows an Indian tanned Rocky Mountain Elk hide which has amazing traditional war shirt beaded panels down the arms, across the back to front along both shoulders and panels along the back and chest. The beadwork is all early glass trade seed cen beads in a traditional geometric pattern in colors of chalk white, greasy yellow, red white hearts and cobalt. The war shirt has a blue ocher mineral pigment paint along the arms and shoulders and is further adorned with red stroud trade clothe and trade clothe and hide wrapped horsehair drop fringes along the arms, chest and back. The bottom edge of the shirt shows a typical curved natural cut which is finished with integral short cut fringe. The piece has the manufacture, design, and materials of the 19th Century with the exact age and origins being unknown. Provenance: From a very large and important private American Indian collection in Paris France the same collection as the Apache War Shirt 19th Century we sold in May 2016, the Metis Cree Beaded Scout Shirt and Pants 1870 from out June 2018 sale and the Nez Perce Tomahawk from James Kash Kash 19th Century from our February 2019 sale. The war shirt is in very good condition with little to no bead loss and has a spectacular finish and design, displaying beautifully. Measures overall 34”L by 66”L across the arms.
