This is a fantastic late 19th early 20th Century Buffalo Horn beaded headdress from the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians of South Dakota. The piece is from circa 1890-1900 and is made of thick, Indian tanned Great American Buffalo Bison hide and was collected off the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The piece shows two polished Buffalo Horns attached at the top of the cap which hangs down the back in a long Buffalo fur trailer or cape. The front shows a beautifully beaded brow band sewn on along with drops of old trade clothe hanging down the left and right side. The beadwork shows a traditional tipi triangular geometric pattern in all early period correct glass trade seed beads with a background of chalk white and colors of cobalt, red white heart and greasy yellow. There is a small drop of feathers attached on the back side of the old buckskin lacing. The head dress is both sewn with sinew and thread sewn, a typical practice with late Indian Wars early Reservation period pieces and shows a nice patina from age and use. This truly displays well and is in good condition.
