Wheel-thrown Japanese stoneware bowl, the creamy buff body covered in a clear glaze and painted in underglaze blue with loose, calligraphic floral or foliage motifs around the exterior and a simple blue line at the rim. The interior is left largely plain, with a circular double-line reserve enclosing a hand-painted signature in Japanese characters to the center. The foot is neatly cut with an unglazed footrim showing the coarse, sandy clay body. A pleasing piece of mid-20th-century mingei-style studio pottery with free brushwork and a warm, slightly rustic feel. Condition: no chips, cracks or repairs observed under normal inspection; minor firing imperfections including small iron spots, pinholes and a few tiny glaze bubbles; one small kiln inclusion/slag spot to the interior floor; very light wear to the rim and foot from use and display. Diameter approx. 5 3/4 in.; height approx. 2 1/4 in.
