Scarce U.S. Winchester/Springfield Hotchkiss 2nd Model Army Carbine

This is a very good example of a desirable Second Model U.S. Army contract Winchester-Hotchkiss carbine. There were approximately 400 of these made for the U.S. Army circa 1880/81 by Springfield Armory using Winchester supplied actions and buttplates. The left side of the receiver has the standard three-line address/patent dates. The upper left rear edge of the receiver is marked with the serial number followed by the U.S. Ordnance inspectors initials "H.N." for Henry Nettleton, which also appear on the extractor and cocking piece. The top of the barrel has Springfield Armory, "V/P/Eagle Head" proof followed by "H.N.". Fixed front sight with the 1879 pattern rear sight, marked "HC". The nickel plated brass forearm tip, swivels to the side to reveal the two holes for the jointed two-piece cleaning rod, (included). This carbine has the short bolt handle. Interestingly there are two sets of cartouches, a boxed "SWP/1881" on the left rear of the stock and a circled "HN" on the opposite side. There is a circled, script "P" proof behind the lower tang.

Very good overall with traces of the original blue finish remaining overall mostly in the protected area with a gray/brown mixed patina on the balance. The stock is also in very good condition with a nice dark brown color overall with minor, light handling marks and light scratches overall. The cartouche and firing proof are both clear and distinct. Mechanically fine.
