San Francisco,CA - March 9, 1854 - San Francisco Daily Herald :
Original printing consisting of a single leaf folded into four pages. It features numerous stories and ads relating to Gold Rush California. Perhaps the most interesting appears under the heading Assayers. It is an appeal from the bankers of San Francisco to the partnership of Kellogg & Richter dated January 14, 1854 asking the firm to resume its minting of gold coins in circulation, since the U.S. Mint at San Francisco had not yet begun striking coins. Following the bankers' letter is printed the response from Kellogg & Richter, in which the company states that it will be able to comply with the request within ten days from this date (January 31, 1854).

Though worn at the edges, this newspaper is still in very nice condition overall. The original folding joint at left is frail, but the pages are still connected to one another. In addition, a later horizontal fold is present with only the slightest damage to the paper. There is the faintest discoloration at the left margin extending about a half inch into the text.

This is a very rare and important document that provides an original account of pioneer coinage during the California Gold Rush.
