San Francisco,CA - 1896 - Sutro Cover :
Adolph Sutro Pioneer Envelope c1896. This small 6 ¼” x 3 ¾” envelope is in very good condition. The top of the obverse is a question written in bold and underlined letters reading “Congress-Men for sale at $20,000 a piece?” Sutro was elected as Mayor of San Francisco from 1894-1896. He was elected on the grounds as supporting the average working citizen and on an anti big-business platform. Around this same time, Leland Stanford was a senator for California. Sutro could have been referring to Stanford with this envelope because Sutro was President of the Southern Pacific Railroad while in office. In addition to his political career, Sutro was equally as famous for his estate, gardens and baths, and also his plan to de-water and de-gas the Comstock Lode by drilling a tunnel through Mt. Davidson, the highest point in Storey County, Nevada.
