SULTANATES : NIZAM SHAHS OF AHMADNAGAR
Burhan Nizam Shah III, Gold Hon/ Pagoda, 3.36g, Fatehnagar Mint, Shuhur 10(2/3?X). Extremely fine, exceedingly rare, unlisted in G&G and other major publications unique so far.

The legends on this hitherto unique coin are reconstructed as Khadim-i Rasool Allah Burhan Nizam Shah (on obverse) and Fi Shuhur Sanah 10(2/3?X)Fatehnagar(on reverse). Burhan Nizam Shah III came to the Nizamshahi throne around 1610, but his minister Malik Ambar, the African general and statesman, was in real charge of the kingdom. He masterminded a great resurgence against the Mughals, who had already occupied the Nizamshahi capital Ahmednagar by this time. Malik Ambar therefore established a new capital at Khadki, not far from the fort of Daulatabad. This place was later renamed 'Fatehnagar'. There is uncertainty about the reason behind this renaming – according to some sources it was Malik Ambar himself who named it as such, after defeating the Mughal army at the battle of Bhatodi in 1624. According to some others, it was named after Fateh Khan, the son and successor of Malik Ambar.

This is the first Nizamshahi coin of this mint ever to come to light. It is struck to the 'normal' standard for a Hon, unlike other Nizamshahi coins, which are struck to the lighter standard of 2.7-2.9 gm. Unfortunately the date it bears is not very clear, but it is certainly to be placed within the 1020-1030 bracket of the Shuhur Era. This places the coin in firm context of the Battle of Bhatodi. It is no doubt a piece of great significance in a historical and numismatic sense.
