Lot # 98 STERLING: OUTSTANDING AND RARE TIFFANY YACHT TROPHY PITCHER “First Prize for Sloops without Time Allowance Won By GRACIE New York Yacht Club Regatta, June 20th, 1872. This wonderful elaborate handled covered pitcher has a marine motif including an anchor and rope finial, full head mask Neptune at base of handle, rope at shoulder holding oak leaf and acorn wreath around presentation inscription. Pitcher is bulbous shaped with full hinged cover. Marked on base “Tiffany & Co. Union Square 2192 4489”. This mark was used between 1870 - 1875. The New York Yacht Club was organized in 1844 and gave out silver trophies as prizes and is still done to this day. These trophies were often illustrated in the newspapers of the day and were treated seriously as works of art. A similar anchor motif can be seen on the 1878 New York Yacht Club trophy in their collection. The largest collection is housed at the New York Yacht Club and includes forty-two of these annual trophies, half of which were made by Tiffany. The “Gracie” was launched in 1868 and was very successful in her challenges. She raced in the cup trials of 1885 but was beaten out by the “Puritan”. SIZE: 11-1/2” h x 8” w.
