This is a Remington 1861 New Army cap and ball revolver. 44 caliber, with all parts intact. The barrel measures 8", overall length is 13". Although the gun has been engraved, with beautiful scroll work on nickel finish, this was not a wall hanger. This gun shows some holster wear as well as some wearing around the hammer and nipples. The action is very tight and the bore is sharp, with a few scratches a quarter of the way down the muzzle. The serial number is 48924, which indicates a December 1863 manufacture date. This number matches on both the under side of the octagonal barrel, as well as inside the butt frame. The nickel finish and scroll work has also covered the factory markings. This particular model was in production from 1863-1875 and was whole heartedly endorsed by Western icon Buffalo Bill Cody. The grips are carved ivory and show an eagle on one side and the California State Seal on the other. There are some cracks and scratches on both sides. This design could mean that the piece was once owned by a prominent California personality. It doesn`t appear to be a presentation piece, but is a beautiful example of the gun engraver`s skill. A nice piece that is still in operating order. -60160
