This unusual coin depicts emperor Septimius Severus on one side, and King Agbar VIII on the other. Osroene, which was located in modern day Turkey, was a vassal state of the Roman Empire. King Agbar VIII was permitted to "rule" this territory, but was, directly or otherwise, answerable to Rome. Septimius Severus came to power in 193 A.D. (the year of five emperors). After Pertinax passed away, Septimius Severus defeated his rivals, generals Prescennius Niger and Albinus, in 194 and 197 respectively. He ruled until 211 A.D., when he succummed to illness and died.
