This is a nearly impossible to find 38-70 WCF caliber Winchester Model 1886 Carbine with special order shotgun butt. The carbine is accompanied by a Winchester Gun Museum factory letter. The letter describes it as: "carbine, caliber 38-70, shotgun butt". The letter states the carbine was shipped from the warehouse on August 17, 1903. The carbine has a blued barrel, magazine upper and lower barrel band, receiver and checkered steel, shotgun buttplate. The hammer and loading lever have a casehardened finish. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The barrel has a block mounted, steel blade, front sight and an adjustable, folding leaf, carbine rear sight. A folding combination peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. A factory saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber, "38-70/W.C.F." is roll-stamped in two lines between the rear sight and the receiver. The underside of the receiver is marked with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates in two lines behind the trigger and the serial number, "108688" between the tang screws. Winchester Model 1886 Carbines are rarely encountered with special order features. Documented special order Model 1886 Carbines are rare.
