ROGER SHERMAN (1721-1793). Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Association, Articles of Confederation (of which he helped draft), and the United States Constitution, being the Only Person to have Signed All Four Key American Documents. JONATHAN TRUMBULL (1710-1785). Connecticut Governor in both a pre-Revolutionary Colony (1769-1776) & post-Revolutionary War State (1776-1784), the only Colonial Governor at the start of the Revolution to take up the rebel cause.
1. July 8, 1784-Dated Post Revolutionary War, Partly-printed Document, Completed By and Signed, “Roger Sherman,” 1 page, measuring 7.25” x 6”, at New Haven (CT), Very Fine. An original legal order to the sheriff to attach the goods and estate and to arrest one Joseph Holmes of New Haven, on a charge of having reneged on a debt. There are a few tiny marginal edge chips, deft archival reinforced sealed folds on the verso are mostly not noticeable. This well printed document is boldly Signed, “Roger Sherman” in deep brown, at the conclusion. A scarce Signer and on a well written, lovely document that would be excellent for display.

2. This lot also includes a June 21, 1745-Dated Manuscript Document Signed, “Jon Trumble”, measuring 5” x 7”, Choice Extremely Fine. The document concerns a land dispute and is written completely in Trumbull’s hand. Trumbull signs as a witness at lower left, using the original spelling of his family name, Trumble. One small hole in the text at upper left, marginal tear on the upper right of the top edge. The original paper and wax seals remain at lower right (the bottom one has been trimmed in half). A nice example of “Brother Jonathan’s” handwriting and signature. (2 items).
