MUSKET W/ STRIKING CURLY MAPLE STOCK. Cal. 78. NSN. 42" Bbl. salvaged from a Brown Bess musket has Birmingham proofs at top rear. Lg. slightly arched flintlock has somewhat rounded plate & is fitted w/ rounded inset pan, bridled frizzen & feather spring w/ spear finial. Rnd. bodied serpentine cock is gracefully shaped. Interior of lock is stamped w/ the initials "IWK" (possibly Jacob Kuntz). Brass furniture was also sourced from a Brown Bess musket. Sideplate is of later flat type. Stock is made from a dramatic piece of tiger maple & is shaped w/ attractive swoop to toeline. CONDITION: iron parts are mostly dark brown patina w/ considerable pitting and metal loss at breech end of bbl. around touch hole, which was bushed during period of normal use. Frizzen is a later cast replacement. Brass furniture is toned to a dark yellow/brown. Stock was probably refinished many years ago & retains considerable amount of newer oil finish. Lock is operable.
