Pair of Antique Montana Mining Pickaxes/Mandrills
In this lot is a pair of antique Montana mining pickaxes. These pickaxes have blacksmith forged heads and wood hafts. This style pickaxe was originally used by miners while mining for copper and silver. These axes feature a shorter handle and a long head, which are ideal for use in close quarters. This type of pickaxe may also be called a "Mandrill", whose name means exactly what the "Pick" was used for. These axes became a status symbol among miners and may have detailed engraving on the head of the axe. The one pickaxe has a 22 1/2" head and a 22 1/2" haft. The head has rust and the top of the haft is dry and has some splits. The second pickaxe has a 15 3/4" head and a 27" haft. "Jo" carved his name into the head of this pickaxe, so no one would take "HIS" tool. This Pickaxe has light rust and the wood shaft is still tight in the head. These Pickaxes are a great set.
