Omaha Indian Reservation,NE - Thurston County - c1870s - Indians Stereoview :
This photo is part of the American Series of stereocards. No photographer noted. The caption beneath the photo says, “The Omaha Indians, Nebraska, U.S.A.” It shows Tipis in which a group of 12 Indian men sit and stand in front. They are dressed in non-traditional clothing, although a couple have blankets wrapped around them. The traditional housing structure for the Omaha was an earth lodge, which had a timber frame covered with thick soil. This photo shows Tipis, which the Omaha used when traveling but at no other time. They borrowed the Tipi tradition from the Lakota. The 1870s were a tragic time for natives on the plains because all their native traditions were being lost and Indians were confined solely to reservations. “This early pirate series was produced during the 1870’s. They issued common, low quality pirated series of US scenery on regular mounts. The maker and city of origin is unknown” [Ref: www.yellowstonestereoviews.com/]. Yellow gold mount, 3.5 x 7.”
